Home Storage Solutions
When searching for a new home, one major thing to consider is storage space. From seasonal items to everyday essentials, it's important to have a spot for everything. Real estate professionals can suggest various storage options, even if the home doesn't have a built-in closet.
Living Spaces
With the rise of flat-screen TVs and Bluetooth speakers, entertainment centers have become obsolete. But, living rooms still require storage for gaming consoles, blankets, remotes, and more. Keep one wall free from storage to make room for the TV. This opens up space and reduces clutter. Another pro-tip is using ottomans and coffee tables with concealed storage. A more recent trend for your throw blankets is using wall hooks or a hay holder for your blankets.
Bedrooms
Walk-in closets are all the rage, but if not possible, make the most of the closet space available with adjustable racks, cubbies, and drawers. Dressers, ottomans, and shoe racks are great for additional storage. When including a walk-in closet, add a dressing table and space for an open suitcase.
Kitchens
The kitchen is a place for minimalism and organization. Inserts from The Container Store, Rev-a-Shelf, or Costco can help keep things tidy. Open shelves can be quite stylish, but they require periodic cleaning. For an efficient pantry closet, add roll-out shelves and keep height and reach in mind. A walk-in or butler's pantry is great for extra storage and messy work out of sight.
Mudrooms and Laundry Rooms
Equipping a secondary doorway with storage for coats, backpacks, and shoes can help minimize clutter. Built-in or freestanding benches with a shelf and hooks may also work. Mudrooms are becoming large enough to accommodate laundry equipment, shelving, and a sink. A clean, freshly painted laundry room will also appeal to potential buyers at resale.
Bathrooms
Older bathrooms are often smaller and have less built-in storage. If remodeling isn't possible, shelves above the toilet or within a medicine cabinet can help. If remodeling is possible, storage should be a priority. Consider adding storage space by building a smaller shower or using space in between wall studs.
Garages
While many companies focus on organizing garages, the goal is to declutter first and not overdo it with storage. A clean garage with a painted floor will create the cleanest and most organized look. If you use your garage for holiday storage there are many creative ways to keep your bins organized.
Nooks, Crannies, and Stairways
Consider converting the space beneath a staircase into a coat rack and container storage area. Install a window seat with storage on a stair landing or use the area under your bed as additional storage space. The possibilities are endless!
